First Rule: Break The Rule

We have just had the most amazing day driving through Rajasthan with our driver Dil. We left Mt Abu after having two nights there and doing all the sightseeing such as the Jain temple, the lake, markets and an angora rabbit farm.

We decided to head for Jaisalmer today but because Dil was unfamiliar with the route from this direction, we ended up on the backroads of Rajasthan. And it was probably  the best thing that could have happened. Dil’s favourite sayings include, “First rule: Break the rule” and “Expect the unexpected.” He is a very funny guy and we are really enjoying driving around with him.

On our way down Mt Abu we stopped by some Langur monkeys who immediately jumped onto the car and started making faces at us. One had a baby which looked very new as it had no hair on it.

Along the back roads we came across crimson turbaned goat and sheep herders, gypsies carrying baby goats in little bags on the back of donkeys and camels, a herd of camels which surrounded me and began to eat the juicy leaves off the trees above and numerous herds of cattle, goats, sheep and camels. It was the most amazing trip.

Everyone Dil asked about the road assured him it was a “Super” highway!! Well, that was a joke. It was a one lane,  pot-holed track but it would have to be the best day we have had in India so far.

Tonight we are in a hotel in the town of  Sanchore, nowhere near Jaisalmer, listening to pre-Diwali firecrackers going off.

“India! An independent Country”: another Dil quote explaining how and why India works as it does.

  2. Hi Bella, Great to hear from you. We loved the baby goats too and just laughed and laughed when we realised what they were. What a way to go!!! Tonight we have finally reached Jaisalmer after driving around incircles for a whole day. It is beautiful here. A huge fort that the town is built around and you should see the hotel we are staying in. Like the Maharaja’s Palace. We met a camel driver today , whose partner is a French teacher who lives here fro 6 months of the year and then goes back to France to teach gypsy children. fascinating! They had a fantastic roof top restaurant which was opposite a haveli, an old mansion. We went to lok at he sunset tonight and I met a man called Deep from Mauritious wearing a Billabong T- shirt, so just had to take a photo. The camels here are great as are the goats, they are everywhere.Lots of great clothes too. I will need to send some stuff back to Aust soon as my bag is getting too heavy. Fancy basketball already. We have forgotten all about stuff like that. We are in another world here. i am glad you are Ok with Mrs parry and I hope all your Transition stuff goes well.
