Rangoli for Diwali

Today at school there was a Rangoli competition amongst the school Houses for the best Rangoli design leading up to Diwali celebrations. The House names are: Samrridthi, meaning Prosperity; Sahas, courage; Satya, truth and Samarpan, sacrifice.

Each House had one hour in which to sketch out their design and fill it in with the special Rangoli coloured powders. The teams worked really well together and it was flat out for everyone for the whole hour.

We stirred them up a bit and got them cheering and clapping for their team as they went!! At times it was deafening.

Tomorrow we leave Ahmedabad at 5:00am to catch a train to Gandhigap and then go by car to Mundra to the Adani School there. Our itinerary has changed a bit! We return to Ahmedabad at the end of the week to go on a 9 day tour of Rajasthan.

Diwali scene: lamps, firecrackers and kids having fun!
Peacock, national bird of India. Our favourite.

  1. Love receiving your updates. Diwali brought back memories of my years in Fiji. Sort of a festival a bit like combining cracker night with the Fringe parade!
You guys seem to be having an amazing time.

  2. Hi Gra,
yes Diwali is huge here. It is the biggest festival of the year and school is closed for three weeks. Many people make journeys home to be with their families at this time. We will be in the desert at Jaisalmer for Diwali which means the light displays will be spectacular. Jaisalmer is in western Rajasthan near the Pakistan border. We are having an amazing time but have all “hit the wall” today and don’t want to see another bowl of dal!! We’ll get over it. It’s been a month now and we have done pretty well so far.
