The School Magazine have published my story “The Rescue” in their “Orbit” magazine.
I got the idea for this story after the Beaconsfield mining tragedy and subsequent rescue. I wanted to take the point of view of a child whose father was one of the rescuers and to show the agony his family went through as they waited for the rescuers to return safely. I did a lot of research on mining disasters in the early days, especially in the collieries of Wales. There have been haunting songs and poems written about mining tragedies over the decades. I included the Miner’s prayer in the story, “Please Lord, let me see the sunshine one more time.”
The story is set in Wales in the early 1900’s and has been beautifully illustrated by Richard C T Gregory.
