Mahatma Gandhi and Elephants in Ahmedabad

Today we hired an auto-rickshaw driver to take us to some spots in Ahmedabad. The first being the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram. This was the most amazing place. It is where he used to live and has been set up with information and photos of his life story and of course souvenirs. What an amazing man. If only there were more of him in the world. I had a go at spinning some thread from raw cotton.

We then visited the Dada Hari Wav Step Well which is an ancient well which has steps going all the way done to the pool at the bottom. The side walls are ornately carved and decorated. We met a young boy who accompanied us on the way down and kept saying, “Australia! India! Cricket!” as he mimed a forward defensive drive. At the top of the well we met his older sister and younger brother and gave them each a koala toy.

We then went elephant “hunting” as I had seen a decorated working elephant earlier, so Jayesh drove us to where they were housed and we met three of them. Two were very spotty. Not sure if this means they are old and losing pigment or what.

Tomorrow we are being picked up at 9:00am to go to the Adani School so that I can meet the staff and work out my programme for the next two weeks.
