Radio Rescue!

My next book to be published by the National Library Australia is Radio Rescue! It has once again been beautifully illustrated by Robert Ingpen.

The story is about how the pedal radio opened up the world for the people of the outback. It also has a hint of the Flying Doctor! Which is what this post is about.

I spent Christmas in Alice Springs and visited the grave of the Reverend John Flynn who was instrumental in the Flying Doctor and its “mantle of safety”.

The grave is at the base of Mt Gillen and has been controversial because the original stones, which marked it, were taken from the highly sacred Aboriginal women’s site of Karlu Karlu, and for over twenty years the owners, the Warumungu and Kaytej, wanted the stone returned.

Finally the stones were returned and replaced with highly sacred stones of the Caterpillar site, by the local Arrente people.

The photos below show the grave with the replacement stones.
