Meeting the Locals

Washing feet and hands before entering mosque.

Today we walked across to Adani Dav School and were given  a tour by Jose. This is a truly beautiful school. Colourful, cool and the classrooms look very much like the inside of an Australian classroom with work displayed on walls and hanging from the ceiling. The youngest class is called Nursery with two and a half year olds!!! They go home at 10:00am though. Then there is Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten. After that it is the normal grade levels up to Year 12.

In the afternoon we went on a tour into town and around the place, driven by the school driver, Soni. We went to an artist’s house all made of cement but it looked like wood. Then on to a Mosque where we had to cover our heads. Ian had nothing for his head so one of the Muslim men there loaned him his little white cap. When Ian went to give it back the guy said he could keep it. We washed our feet and hands before entering the Mosque which was 300 years old.

We then went to the old stone gateway to the Old Mundra town. This part of the town was fascinating. Totally untouched by tourism. Narrow streets with Hindus, Muslims and Jains all living and trading together in harmony. We saw some  250 year old houses which are now empty and falling apart as the owners have moved to Mumbai and other big cities. Soni took us to a local family who invited us in to their house. Only one room in which the whole family leaves but they were all smiles.

Then we had a famous Mundra “burger”. This consists of a sweet white bread roll filled with spiced potatoes, roasted peanuts, sweet chutney and fried in butter. Absolutely delicious.

Tomorrow we will start working with some classes.

What an environment to work in! Imagine coming here every day.
